The hooked rug is the quiet workhorse of folk textile traditions. Strips of yarn pulled by hand through a stretched canvas, loop by loop, building a pile from the back of the cloth forward. The technique travelled from the British coastal villages to the Maritime provinces of Canada and from there into the American craft revival of the early twentieth century. What survives in the form today is the loose, slightly irregular surface that no power loom can imitate, and the ability to carry painterly colour blends a knotted rug cannot match.
This piece was hand-hooked in India over roughly six weeks. Wool yarn was drawn through a heavy cotton primary one loop at a time with a steel hook, then sealed at the back with a natural latex set. A finisher trimmed the loops to a uniform height and bound the edges by hand. The work is slower than tufting because the loops are pulled rather than punched. Each loop sets the tension for the next, and a single uneven row throws the field above it.
The composition
A tribal patchwork of taupe, soft sage, and warm grey, with small bands of cream and cocoa breaking the field at uneven intervals. The neutral palette reads as a single washed plane from across the room and resolves into the colour blocks on approach. The wool is undyed in the cream passages and lightly over-dyed in the greys, which keeps the colour live rather than flat. The piece pairs with bleached oak, with rattan, with linen, and with the pale terracotta of a sun-faded courtyard floor.
The piece in a room
The hooked surface tolerates a covered verandah and the working floor of a kitchen better than a plush wool pile would. A patchwork of neutrals reads quietly at the foot of a bed, in front of a low bench, or as the floor anchor of a reading nook. The size as listed should be checked against the room before placement; the geometry holds at small accent scale and at modest area scale alike.
Care
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged so the loops are not pulled out of the canvas. Blot any spill with clean cotton, never rub or scrub the hooked surface. Light shedding is normal for the first few weeks. Spot clean with mild detergent on a damp cloth. A wool-safe professional clean every two to three years keeps the colour true.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
