A Persian field is one of those drawings that survives changes in fashion. It belonged to country houses a century ago, to mid-century apartments fifty years ago, and to design-led flats today. The rug renews the motif in a wool tufted to a comfortable height, with the colour values rebalanced for a present-day room.

Production ran 5 weeks. A team of 2 tufters and a finisher worked from the back of the canvas, pushing wool through with a pneumatic tufter. The face was then carved with hand shears so that the blue, multi and light blue field reads with crisp boundaries rather than soft edges. The carved profile gives the rug its tactile dimension; pattern and ground sit at slightly different heights, which is what makes the design read in raking light as well as overhead light.

The composition

A blue, multi and light blue field with quieter ground notes. The wool is dense enough to read as a saturated colour at distance and as a textured surface up close. The hand-shearing keeps the pattern edges sharp without the mechanical look of a printed rug. The reverse of the pile carries a soft cotton scrim, which keeps the rug stable on the floor and quiet underfoot.

The wool itself is sourced from highland flocks where longer staple length and lower lanolin give a yarn that takes dye cleanly and resists matting under traffic. The hand-tufted construction sits between the formality of a hand-knotted rug and the casualness of a flat-weave; it offers underfoot comfort without the price of a knotted piece.

The piece in a room

size as listed is a working scale for living rooms in flats and primary bedrooms. The pile is plush enough to feel underfoot in a bedroom and dense enough to hold up under a coffee table in a sitting room. Pair with linen upholstery and oak or walnut furniture. In a bedroom, place the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed so the pile catches bare feet on the way out in the morning.

Care

Use a soft-bristle vacuum or suction setting; avoid rotating brushes. Blot spills with cotton, then air-dry. The latex backing is durable but should not sit on a damp floor for extended periods. A professional clean every two to three years is sufficient. Rotate the rug every six months so traffic patterns spread evenly across the pile.
